Research collaboration: Application of machine learning and AI techniques to mining geomechanics problems. The collaboration started with co-supervision of PhD candidate Weizhang Liang, visiting scholar from Central South University, China. The project was to analyze induced seismicity data in order to predict rockbursting and large seismic events in tunnels and around mining stopes. The collaboration continues with co-supervision of Ricardo Quevedo, who is applying machine learning techniques to analyzing a large and diverse set of data related to damage and collapse of crown pillars in the new Chuquicamata underground cave mining operation, northern Chile.
