In 2002 the Australian Centre for Geomechanics held the First International Seminar on Deep and High Stress Mining. We are delighted that SAIMM and SANIRE are hosting the Deep Mining 2019 Conference in South Africa.

Past Deep Mining Conferences have been held in Perth, 2017; Sudbury, 2014; Perth, 2012; Santiago, 2010; Perth, 2007; Quebec City, 2006; Johannesburg, 2004; Perth, 2002.

Around the world, mines are getting deeper and the challenges of stress damage, squeezing ground and rockbursts are ever present. Mining methods and support systems have evolved slowly to improve the management of excavation damage and safety of personnel, but still damage occurs and personnel get injured. Techniques for modelling and monitoring have been adapted and enhanced to help us understand rock mass behaviour under high stress. Many efficacious dynamic support products have been developed, but our understanding of the demand and capacity of support systems remains uncertain.
